A few times every baseball season, a game happens where everything goes against you. You don’t play particularly well, and your opponent does. Every ball you hit is rolled out on a perfectly-ironed red carpet directly at a mitt, and every ball your opponent hits finds the button that fell off of the groundskeeper’s pants when they were smoothing the dirt.

It’s not a dominant ass-whooping, like when the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 17-1 just 10 days ago. It’s just a quiet, normal game in which you lose by a quiet, normal score, while looking like a quiet, normal team that never actually had a chance of winning.
